Massachusetts’ legislature is one of the most secretive in the country. Important progressive legislation is killed year after year in back rooms without any public record. We asked our elected legislators to take action to create transparency today so important progressive bills don’t die in darkness.

In the 2025 joint rules published by the statehouse and state senate, public committee votes are now codified! These joint rules also secured many other transparency-focused rules, especially regarding how joint committees operate. The new rules established that plain-language summaries must be posted, that attendance must be reported, and that members of the public can attend remotely. This is not a silver bullet, but many of the items on the pledge are now codified into the daily operations of the legislature.
