Lift the Ban on Local Tenant Protections

What this bill would do:

• Allows municipalities to create local tenant protection laws to protect renters’ right to housing
• Enables municipalities to enact rent control measures for multi-family properties and mobile homes
• Enables municipalities to enact just cause eviction protections, prohibiting landlords from evicting tenants without just cause (such as failure to pay rent, property damage, etc.)

Why we need it:

The lack of affordable housing across the state continues to increase homelessness and cost-burdens for Bay Staters. This bill helps to establish specific protections for small landlords, promote the production of new housing, and allow for local control of the rental market and ability to adopt measures that promote accessible housing.
